Mental Health Related to Omega-3 Fatty Acids by Gabby LaSala – Kelly’s Choice Undergraduate Nutrition Intern with Penn State

Most Americans are low in Omega-3 fatty acids, especially children. Research has shown that 95% of children in the United States are not meeting the nutritional needs of omega 3 (Omega-3 Fatty Acids). Having a deficiency in omega 3 can not only impact your physical health but also your mental health.

What we eat also influences how we feel. Personally, when I eat something sweet like a piece of chocolate, I tend to feel happier. Omega-3s are also considered a “good mood food.” At the beginning of the year, a study was conducted by Pharmavite, the maker of NatureMade vitamins. They were looking at the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids consumed and depression. They used a 2012 analysis from NHANES that revealed adults with higher omega-3 levels also had a decreased risk of depression (Study Finds Most Americans Low in Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Could Impact Mood). Many people from around the world suffer from mental illnesses every day and we need to keep researching ways to help. Currently, mental health conditions such as dementia, schizophrenia, dyslexia, and childhood mood disorders are being researched for their relationship with omega-3.

Bipolar disorder, a mental health condition that causes a severe range of mood swings, has also been relieved by omega-3 consumption. Omega-3 also has been proven to stabilize mood and aid in short-term symptoms of bipolar disorder (Omega-3s).

An easy way to add more omega-3 fatty acids into your diet is by drinking EO3! It is a multi-nutritional smoothie that is filled with omega-3. Rather than having a fishy aftertaste like fish oil pills, it is flavored with apples, pears, and raspberry. It also contains many other antioxidants, vitamins, and protein to fuel you throughout your day. Not only will your body be happy, but also your mind!
